Track of the week

S-Express

My heart skipped a beat when seeing this old sign we passed in London. The group S-Express and their music really influenced me as a teenager and was one of the first groups to introduce acid house to a bigger audience. They released the epic track Theme from S-Express in 1988. (Wow, has it been that long?) and followed up with Hey music lover and Mantra for a state of mind in 1989. After that the group lost focus and was later split but please check out the songs. They’re still just as great:)

Chicane – Windbreaks

Chicane has been a favorite group of mine for many, many years and I’ve posted a few songs here before. I must have been dozing a lot lately because I’ve actually missed the latest album which was released last year. I haven’t had time to listen through it all yet and today’s track, Windbreaks, is actually the first song that I heard. It’s quite possible that there are songs just as good and beautiful as this one but I thought that this was one you ought to hear for yourself.

Every single tone send chills down my spine:)

Amsterdam Klezmer Band – Sadagora Hot Dub

Yesterday R & I went to see the annual Klezmer festival at Mejeriet in Lund. It started at 15 and ended some 5 hours and 4 bands later. Of all the bands I enjoyed the last one, Kapell Klezmorim from Malmö, the most. I’m a huge fan of Klezmer music and I’ve been listening to it for some ten years by now. This includes everything from traditional Klezmer to what you find below which is a bit more club like with a modern electronic beat to it.

Laleh – Ängeln i rummet

I’m not a huge fan of Swedish singer Laleh. Even though I have great respect for her as an artist she somehow gets on my nerves. This song is however awesome! “Ängeln i rummet” is apparently a cover of an old song by Eva Dahlgren, something that I didn’t have a clue about until my Danish girlfriend enlightened me. On a sidenote it’s somewhat embarrassing that she knows more about Swedish music than I do;)

(Ber om ursäkt för “jag har vårtor” kommentaren i youtubevideon. Inte något jag kan påverka:)

M|A|R|R|S – Pump up the volume

I listened to this song made by M|A|R|R|S last night and started to think about when I had posted it on the blog. I did a quick search and to my surprise I hadn’t posted it at all! Pump up the volume is one of the best songs that I’ve ever heard and, to me, it’s a real life changer. This song, more than any other, is what made me start listening to electronic music. This was back in 1987 and I’m still listening:)

Colin Hay – Maggie

Colin hay is one of my absolute favorite artists and he has been here on this blog a couple of times before but not with this track. Maggie is a beautiful song with really nice and sad lyrics so pay attention to the video and sing a long if you want to:)

Paul Van Dyk – My World

It’s Friday and what better way to kick off the weekend than by playing some old trance music for you? I don’t care much for Paul Van Dyk nowadays because he has become quite commercial but back in the nineties his music was nothing but amazing. This song was released in 1995 and oh, the memories I get when I listen to it. It’s still as awesome as when I first heard it:)

Vincent De Moor – Fly Away

Ever heard of dub-step? If not here’s a good song to get you started:)

TV2 – Randers Station

A new “track of the week” comes with somewhat irregular intervals here but today it’s finally time for a new one. The last couple of years I have begun to listen more to Danish music and that’s something that I wish I would have started with earlier because there are so many great groups. The last one I’ve taken to my heart is a band called TV-2. I just read about them at wikipedia and to my surprise they’ve been around making music since back in 1981. I have only found two albums on the net so far which gives me another 17 (!) to go. I doubt I will have time to play them all for you but here’s a little taste of what they sound like:)

Bon Iver – Come talk to me

I came in contact with the American band Bon Iver back in 2008 with their song Re: stacks and I’ve had my eyes, or ears, on them ever since. The song I chose for today is actually a cover of a song written by Peter Gabriel which I have always liked. I don’t think I can say if I like one version more than the other but the singer of Bon Iver, Justin Vernon, sure has a voice that gives it a new feeling to me.

Miss Li – Arrested

I’ve liked the Swedish artist Miss Li for a couple of years now. She has a wonderful voice and the music is great with just a touch of quirky sprinkled on top:) Last week R and I went to Malmö and saw her perform at Stortorget during the Malmöfestival. It was a great concert and she was, if possible, even better than on record. From the minute she stepped on to the last song she owned the audience along with her skilled musicians. The song I chose for today is from her newest album called Beats & Bruises which I actually hadn’t heard that much of before the concert but that has certainly changed by now;)

De Eneste To – Den lige vej (remix)

It’s time for a new song here on the blog. I first heard the Danish group De eneste To last year and liked them at once. The new single, Den lige vej, is even better. Give it a try:)

Shanghai – Looking for love (lulu rouge mix)

It’s about time for a new song here on the blog. Lulu Rouge is a group that has been played a lot on my cell phone the last couple of months. Both their own material and their excellent remixes. Today’s song is one of the latter: A really cool remix of Shanghai’s song Looking for love. The real version is just over 5 minutes long but I couldn’t find it on YouTube:(

Marie Frank – Under the water

There are still plenty of pictures around to show you but today we take a short break for the track of the week. This song is a remix made by a Danish duo called Brother Brown of a song called Under the water by another Danish artist called Marie Frank, a.k.a. Frank’ee. I just recently heard this track and was pretty astonished to find out that it was released back in 1999. There is so much great music out there that you never get a chance to hear. Sigh;)

Agnes Obel – Riverside (remix)

Agnes Obel is a new artist from Denmark. She released her first album, Philharmonics,  in October last year and it has been well received throughout Europe. Riverside is on that album but not in the version that you’re listening to here. This is a remix made by two other danes calling themselves Lulu Rouge.

Beastie Boys – Make some noise

I have been a huge fan of Beastie Boys ever since their debut album Licensed to Ill back in 1986. Their latest albums haven’t interested me as much as their earlier stuff but if the new album Hot sauce committee part two, released in may, is as good as the new single it will certainly rank high on my hit list of 2011. I have still only heard this single but it sounds to me like they are taking a step back toward their roots with a heavy use of samplings and so on. I love it:)

As always with the Beastie Boys the video is a show in itself. Watch it and try to name all the actors;)

Vinnie Who – Killer bee (remix)

I heard something interesting on Danish radio a while ago. I can’t remember the exact numbers but they compared how much Danish music Swedish radio played and vice versa. It turns out that Danes get the chance to hear much more Swedish music than the Swedes get to hear of the Danish music scene. This sounds quite unfair because there is so much happening across that bridge but I guess it’s because Swedish radio is being controlled from Stockholm and we all know what their priorities are;). Anyway. Vinnie Who is one of those artists that I have come to like over the last couple of years. I chose his latest single for you today but “What you got is mine” or “Remedy” are equally good:)

The Books feat. José González – Cello song

I know! has the world finally gone totally bonkers? Two “tracks of the week” in the same week?! What’s next? Apple not suing anyone for a day or two?;)

I found this song just a few days ago and like it so much that I can’t wait until next week to share it with you guys. Whenever I listen to José González for a longer period of time I tend to fall asleep but when he’s being served in smaller portions like this I find him really hard to dislike. I think Cello song is one of his best songs, right up there with the classic Heartbeats.

Have a nice weekend:)

Rosa Lux – Min klub først

According to the website Discogs Danish dj Rosa Lux hasn’t released that many songs yet. The track “Min klub først” has been getting a lot of airtime on Danish p3 the last couple of weeks and that’s where I first heard it. I really like this song and this remix, made by Hankat, is absolutely amazing. When the year is rounded up this will definitely be one of my top ten favorites:)

Jon Nørgaard – Dine Øjne

Time flies and even I wonder what happened to the music on this site. We’re in the middle of the weekend so there’s still hope for a good time and what way to better get there than by some great music? Jon Nørgaard is a Danish artist that I don’t know that much about but this song is really, really good:)

Familjen – Första/sista

I know that I’ve been lazy with music here as of lately and that must change! I’m not really sure which day of the week that is best suited for this. On the one hand Monday is nice, to get us started on a new week but, on the other hand, Fridays could give us a great start on the weekend. Oh, the agony of choices!;)

Perhaps it’s best to not have a special day at all but to just post a song when I feel it’s suitable. Anyway, Familjen is a Swedish group I can’t say I have heard that much of. They are perhaps best known for their hit ”Det snurrar i min skalle” and that’s one of the songs I know from them. I chose to go with the other one in the hope that it’s perhaps new to you?

Counting Crows – Colorblind

Sometimes it takes a long time for me to like a song or an entire album for that matter. Other times I like them as soon as I hear the first few seconds. Colorblind by Counting Crows belongs in that second category. What a great song:)

Please press the picture to hear and see Colorblind on youtube and oh, have a great weekend! Cheers:)

Jóhann Jóhannsson – The sun’s gone dim and the sky’s turned black

It’s been a long time since I posted a song here but today I thought I would give you one that I just heard but have really come to like. Jóhann is an Icelandic artist and has actually released quite a few albums since 2002. I haven’t had the time to listen to anything from those but if they are anything like this song below they’re certainly worthwhile to check out.

Please press the picture for a trip to YouTube and the song.

Taken By Trees – Sweet child o’ mine

Good morning to you all. Here’s a nice and mellow song to start off the week with. I first heard it in the American movie, Let me in, which is their version of the Swedish movie Låt den rätte komma in. This newer version is ok but it can’t compete with the original on any level. In addition, the question I ask myself is why they have to keep on doing these remakes? I know it’s all about money but that just makes it even sadder. Good song though:)
