The last two days of our bicycle vacation in Belgium were spent in Ypres. As I’ve written here before, and you probably know, the area around Ypres was were the First World War came to a stalemate and the war was fought from trenches for a couple of years. This led to huge amounts of casualties on both sides. More than 500.000 men died and new bodies were found well into 1939, some 21 years after the First World War actually ended!. They were all buried in one of the over 170 war cemeteries that lies around Ypres. You can’t go far by bike or car before seeing some of the road signs pointing them out in the landscape.
